The advanced electronics mega-trend is changing nearly every facet of the economy. Is it possible for key ideas such as Artificial Intelligence and Internet-of-things to build interesting health solutions. Of course, the answer is yes. As an expert in the world of electronics, the institute was engaged by two health related startups in an advisory role.

Etrolz: Etrolz was a talented control systems design team which spun out of Cadence Design Systems. They architected a core IOT/AI technology which focused on non-invasive monitoring of critical human electromagnetic signals. The technology consisted of sensors, analog signal chain, DSP, and a central analysis engine. The development model involved working with leading researchers at places such as Massachusetts General Hospital, Johns Hopkins, MIT, Tufts, and others on research projects. When the projects were successful, a company was spun-out. Successful spinouts included Mindchild (Fetal ECG) and Mirtle (ECG inside MRI).

Quantitative Medicine: Pharmaceutical drug trials are very expensive. Is it possible to use machine learning to accelerate them ? Qtmed built a platform that efficiently explores very large experimental spaces composed of the effects of potential drug compounds on numerous, diverse targets. The company was recently acquired.

 The Next Step

Artificial Intelligence, Internet-of-things, machine learning are just tools. The real issues in medicine are behavioural in nature. Three behavioural changes (avoiding drugs, eating right, and adequate exercise) would improve millions of peoples lives and drastically change the economics of the health-care system.  Is it possible to change behaviours? Might the modern tools of internet marketing be useful in building solutions?

In 2020, the institute (working with Florida PolyTechnic University) built a thought-piece on this topic titled: “Capitalism, Addiction, and Public Policy:  Defining the Next Generation of Treatment Machinery.
